Night Preludes
Highly atmospheric and colourful 'Night Preludes' was inspired by the paintings of Catalan painter Joan Miro. The extraordinary juxtaposition of figures and objects set against an almost bare background is reflected in the music, where at times there is little or no connection between groups of notes.
That there is no separating each prelude is intentional so again the performer may bring his or her own ideas to this aspect. The composer strongly advocates the study and appreciation of Miro's paintings, particularly from the 1950's, e.g. 'People in the Night' (1950) as this will surely provide a better understanding of the intention behind this piece.

The visual story is based around the timber church of Petäjävesi, one of the common heritages of mankind on the UNESCO*s list. Three religions are depicted by various characters: Christianity, Eastern dragon and the Witchcraft of Lapland. Maybe they rule the player, or has the player a force upon them?
Gnomes of the Night
'Gnomes of the Night' was composed in 1985 and is inspired by the words of, and dedicated to Marc Chagall. The work conjures up images of the nocturnal world and the creatures that we sometimes imagine inhabit it. Here, we are presented with the idea of gnomes in a fantasy existence, where there are no rules of perspective! The many and varied effects are always employed for an artistic purpose, with a musical and atmospheric aim in mind, and the performer must bring great imagination and conviction to their approach and interpretation of this unusual and challenging work.

On the video, the guitarist is a prisoner in the World of Gnomes; isolated from the real world by stone walls, brick walls and the Labyrinth Garden of Jatuli.
Night Poems in a Clockshop a little before One O'Clock
This piece was composed in 1989, and it is based on a legend about a Jewish clockmaker during the World War II, who was able to tell the exact time without any clock or watch to help him. The Nazis took all the clocks and watches from his shop, but because of his miraculous power, he was able to organize the secret escape of Jews abroad. Kai Nieminen's nocturnal piece is a study of various ticking and clicking sounds of mechanical clocks. The piece is dedicated to Salvador Dali, whose painting 'The Persistence of Memory' from 1931 was a great inspiration to the composer.
John Mills
The story on the video shows three different clocks in the workshop, where each of them will tell it's own story in black and white. The large ominous and threatening mechanism is waiting outside doing it's continuous work...
The Tale of Astolpho on the Moon
To go up to the Moon, it is the custom to resort to hybrid races of winged horses, a Pegasus, a Hippogryph; the Fairies rear them in their golden stables to yoke them, in twos or threes, to racing chariots. Astolpho had his Hippogryph, so he climbed into the saddle. He rode off into the heavens. The waxing Moon came toward him. It glided.
Astolpho had climbed up to seek Reason in the world of the gratuitous, himself the Knight of the Gratuitous. What wisdom would be drawn for the Earth's guidance from this Moon of the poets' ravings?
On the white fields of the Moon, Astolpho encounters the poet, intent on interpolating into his warp the rhymes of the octaves, the threads of his plots, his reasons and his unreasons.
"No, the Moon is a desert." This was the poet's reply, to judge by the last card put down on the table: the bald circumference of the Ace of Coins.
'The Tale of Astolpho' written by Italo Calvino. Tr. William Weaver.
